Dwight Howard is an average offensive player in the NBA. posted on 06/12/2009

Dwight Howard? Average NBA player?  "No way" most of you may say.  Well average he is. 

Many of you have seen Dwight Howard throw down a thunderous jam.  In fact, you may have seen him do this quite often.  He led the league in dunks.  Glamour points.  He even wears the superman cape, giving him a bigger than life image as the NBA most dominant center. 

As a leave-your-jaw-on-the-ground dunker, Howard is as impressive as any player the league has ever seen.  As an offensive juggernaut, he is  not. 

Let's analyze his offensive game a bit.  Dwight's offense is base on only one thing.  Athleticism. Because of his great size, strength, speed, and leaping ability, no center in the NBA can match up with him in the physical sense.   Any long, fundamentally sound center can neutralized Howard's strengths.  The Lakers have showcase that.  Lamar Odom and Pau Gasol have made him look ordinary with their great length and decent quickness.  The Lakers have also exposed his weak hands (constantly stripping him of the ball) and his inability to pass well out of the double team.  Until Dwight can develope a consistent post move (his running hook is horrible) or two, improve his free throw shooting, and become adept at passing out of double teams more effectively, he will continue to be known as a great dunker with an average offensive game.
